ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION: Oral
THERAPEUTIC CLASSIFICATION: Centrally acting opioid analgesic
THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS: Management of moderate to severe pain, acute or chronic, when the use of an opioid analgesic is deemed necessary.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity to tramadol or other opioids, acute intoxication with alcohol, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, psychotropic drugs or CNS depressants, patients on monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of their discontinuation, uncontrolled epilepsy.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS: Risk of dependence, abuse, and tolerance; may cause drowsiness, dizziness, seizures, and respiratory depression at high doses or in combination with other CNS depressants. Caution in patients with a history of seizures, head injury, respiratory disorders, or renal impairment. Not recommended for children under 12 years and adolescents after tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy.
DOSAGE: Adults and adolescents over 12 years: usual dose is 50 to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed; maximum daily dose 400 mg.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Risk of serotonin syndrome with SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, triptans, and other serotonergic drugs. Potentiates the CNS depressant effects of alcohol, benzodiazepines, anesthetics, and other opioids. Interaction with warfarin and drugs that inhibit or induce CYP2D6 and CYP3A4.
